Does a wedding band have to have diamonds on it? For the man and woman? Seems like that's all I see these days.

I ask because a friend of mine is getting married and she doesn't want a plain band but she doesn't want one with diamonds either. She wants her birth stone but then she says it may look too much like a mother's ring instead of a wedding band. Ideas?
